25 years...

25 years.

today marked the 25th anniversary of the space shuttle challenger disaster.

i very much remember watching the launch at school and being horrified when it exploded soon after liftoff.

here's an article about the anniversary.

here's a nasa video about the anniversary:

here comes the sun

the sun came out this morning.

and luckily stayed out the entire day!

insert happy face here.

lee (sister) and i went to get lunch after she was on call at the hospital all night.

i took her to the people's sandwich of portland.

she's a people's sandwich virgin and luckily she loved it.

ps.  people's sandwich is now offering:

lee insisted on her usual post call froyo but this time we decided to keep it in the downtown area.

she wasn't loving it so we ended up at pudding on the rice where, you guessed it, they serve rice pudding.

lee loved it and sampled everything.  every single one of them.

i had tart froyo which was equally yum.

now back to the sunshine...

we walked around a little bit.  i mean, when the weather is nice you have to grab it by the balls.

and random dude sleeping on the bench.  his tag said "security".  hmmm...

after getting home later, there was the hottest hot pink sunset ever.   i couldn't get my camera till it was almost gone...

things to do in portland...

there are plenty of places i keep telling myself i'm going to visit while i live in portland.  somehow, i keep putting it off but it's time to get on it...

powell's books - ok, so i still haven't been

i know there is more but i can't think of them right now.  any suggestions?

time to get on it...

i think i must be dreaming...

sun, is that you?

it's been so long since i've seen you that i think i must be dreaming.

whatever the case, i was glad to see you.  too bad you didn't stick around through today.

nope, you just couldn't do it, could you?  nothing but clouds today.  but i'm so not complaining because it did not rain today!

the clouds did not stop us today.  lee and i ventured up to the farmer's market in the neighborhood.

lee enjoyed a bagel with pumpkin, pesto and cream cheese.

and because of this, i couldn't stop staring at the booth that was selling local meat.

it was enormous and it kept looking at me.

happy birthday, elliot

happy birthday elliot.

i cannot believe my sweet dog is 14 today.

but mostly, i hate that i'm not with him to celebrate.  he lives with my parent's on the east coast and right now i hate that arrangement.

it is what it is and i have to wish him happy birthday from afar....

so happy birthday elliot.  i love you and i miss you.

01.11.11

it's 01.11.11.

yeah, i'm not that excited about it.  maybe when it's 11.11.11 i'll have more enthusiasm.

*********

finally settling back into portland and damn it's cold.

it's been raining ice shards all evening.  and i do mean shards.  it feels like glass on the skin.

i guess it's better than rain?

after returning to portland, lee, will and i went to get our mexican on.

we decided to try the crazy place in our neighborhood.

everywhere you look there are neon colors and they call everyone amigo.

upon entry and exit you are offered toothpicks, mints and hand sanitizer.

and then there is the big animal outside just asking to be violated.

no comment....

back to portland

first blog while back in portland for the new year.

hard to believe it's 2011.

2011.

where did the last decade go?

************

it was hard to leave raleigh behind and to say goodbye to my sweet dog.

i hate more than anything leaving him.  somehow i think it gets harder each time.

*************

flew out on a 6:20am flight.

6:20am!

that means getting up at 3:30am.  a time when i'm usually going to bed.

needless to say it was dark out.

are pilots able to function and operate all of this at that hour?

it was dark for quite a while since we were flying west.

then an amazing sunrise came up on the left side of the plane.

that only semi distracted me from the young mormon guy i sat next to.  he spent a good portion of time preaching the gospel to me.

now listen... i respect anyone's beliefs.  but please do not try to convert me at 5:50am before we've even taken off.

i can barely sit up at that hour, much less think.

the next flight i sat next to a man that picked his nose most of the flight.  and when he wasn't picking he was sleeping with his hat covering his face.  lovely.

here's the view:

made it safely back to portland before noon.

i was delirious from the lack of sleep but glad to be home.

end of the year

i didn't really blog towards the end of december so i'm behind and i'm not going to attempt to catch up!

my time in raleigh is coming to a close with less than a week left.

i'm looking forward to going home to portland but i'm going to miss my sweet dog.

it snowed a few times while i've been here.

here's elliot in the snow:

here are some other snow pics:

a new year...

1.1.11

finally, a new year and i could not be more ready for it.

it seems like every year starts out with the best of intentions and does not always pan out to my expectations.

it's time for a compromise...less expectations.

2010 wasn't a bad year.  it definitely had it's ups along with its downs.

2011.

i'm going to make more ups.

make it happen instead of waiting for it to happen.

loving more.

smiling more.

working more.

creating more.

laughing more.

traveling more.

exploring more.

opening up more.

these aren't resolutions.  just intentions.

time to make it happen...

i wish everyone the best!
